what you need to know about sodium
Would you believe me if I told you that you probably are NOT consuming enough sodium?
Have you been told to stick to 2300mg of sodium a day? Or even lower if you have cardiac issues?
If so, you were likely misinformed.
Now I’m not saying you can eat TONS of sodium or that McDonald’s is a health food. And I’m not saying that a low sodium diet won’t decrease blood pressure. It will, but not to a huge extent for the effort it takes. Most research shows a reduction by 6mm Hg by eating only 500mg of sodium per day, which is a significant difference. But a tiny bit of sodium. 😩
But you know what else lowers blood pressure by just as much? Adequate potassium intake. 👏🏼
Sodium gets the bad rap but more often than not it’s not too much sodium in the diet, it’s a lack of potassium. And we lose sodium during times of stress and when we sweat. Hello busy mamas in the summer time 👋🏼
We NEED sodium for essential body functions AND we need potassium too.
Sodium is an electrolyte that supports the chemical processed in your body.
If you eat balanced meals and cook at home often, chances are you are NOT getting the sodium you need.
Following FAD diets and restricting your sodium intake can impair your metabolism, hormones, gut health, immune system, and more.
Here are a few ways we can add sodium into our diet:
Drink a Mineral Mocktail in the morning.
Add Himalayan or sea salt to your food.
Avoid processed foods that have “less sodium” marketed because they are likely just filled with additives more harmful than salt.
Snack on things like pickles, olives, cheese, and salted nuts.
